Quiz 3: Russia, Russia, Russia…

This batch of questions takes a little more focus. It's only 5 questions, and some of them are pretty pivotal for understanding recent U.S. history.

1. "The best people"

In 2013 the FBI bugged some Russian spies, and heard them speaking about an American target of their Russian intelligence recruiting efforts. In the audio recordings one Russian spy says plainly, "I will feed him empty promises... He got hooked on Gazprom, thinking that if they have a project, he could rise up... how else to work with foreigners? You promise a favor for a favor." This Russian target later became Donald Trump's first foreign policy advisor for matters relating to Russia. Which Trump advisor was that Russian target?

2. Say what?

Donald Trump made all of these statements on camera. Which one did he speak LAST, after making all these other statements?

"I have nothing to do with Russia. I have, John, John, how many times do I have to tell you? Are you a smart man? I have nothing to do with Russia. I have nothing to do with Russia."

"How many times do I have to answer this question, Russia is a ruse."

"I have no deals in Russia. I have no deals that could have been in Russia... We could make deals in Russia very easily if we wanted to, I just don't want to because I think that would be a conflict."

"He (Michael Cohen) put out a statement talking about a project... that we were looking at in Moscow. Everybody knew about it. It was written about in newspapers. It was a well-known project."

3. One man's hoax...

5. After the signed letter of intent is published Trump's attorney, Mr. Giulliani, shifts his story saying "...no plans were ever made. There were no drafts... Much ado about nothing, because the New York Times wants to crucify the President."

4. Define "collusion"
During the summer of 2016 Rob Goldstone contacted Donald Trump Jr. in writing, by email. He explained in writing that:
a) he was acting as an intermediary for the Russian government and
b) the Russian government wanted to assist the Trump campaign to win the presidential election.

Eventually this email exchange was published by Donald Trump Jr., and the following quotes are taken directly from that correspondence.

Your job is to drag these actual quotes into the correct order in which they were sent. (We gave you the first and last quotes, so you only need to sleuth out the middle ones).

• Trump Jr.: "Great. It will likely be Paul Manafort (Trump Campaign Chairman) my brother in law (Jared Kushner) and me. 725 Fifth Ave 25th floor."
5. Despite explicitly agreeing to meet about campaign dirt from "Russia and its government," Trump Jr. later tweeted that the meeting was "about adoption policy and the Magnitsky Act." Those terms are thinly veiled code for Russian sanctions, which Russia desperately wanted the U.S. to lift. [Hint: this one goes last.]
• Goldstone: "Hope all is well. Emin asked that I schedule a meeting with you and the Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow for this Thursday. I believe you are aware of the meeting – and so wondered if 3pm or later on Thursday works for you? I assume it would be at your office."
• Trump Jr.: "Thanks Rob I appreciate that... if it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer. Could we do a call first thing next week when I am back?"
1. Rob Goldstone email to Trump Jr.: "The Crown prosecutor of Russia... offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.
This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump... What do you think is the best way to handle this information... it is ultra sensitive so wanted to send to you first."

5. Sometimes, timing is everything...

During the Trump campaign and presidency, significant news events have often come in twos. These two events both involved agents of the Russian intelligence service (the GRU) conducting active measures to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. Can you match the paired events that happened on the exact same day?
